What does the Church tell us about Ash Wednesday? She gives us a summary of what this day is all about in the opening prayer of our Mass: “Grant, O Lord, that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of Christian service, so that, as we take up battle against spiritual evils, we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint.”
Lent, according to this prayer, is a campaign of Christian service. Lent is marked by reflection on the self-sacrifice of Jesus, who gave himself up on the Cross for our sins. Service is modeling this attitude of Jesus, of thinking of others before ourselves, of making sacrifices for the sake of others. Today marks the beginning of the season when we remind ourselves that our lives are not for us, our lives are for others.
But the Church goes deeper: “…as we take up battle against spiritual evils…” What do we mean by spiritual evils? We might think about the seven deadly sins: Pride, Envy, Wrath, Greed, Sloth, Lust, and Gluttony. These are spiritual evils because they cause us to focus on ourselves – what we want, what we can have, what we can take. None of these helps us to focus on others. Or we might think about the four false sources of happiness: wealth, pleasure, power, and fame. Again, these are spiritual evils because they are selfish – they focus us inward on ourselves, and not on others.
The prayer concludes: “…so that…we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint.” What are these weapons of self-restraint? They are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, the pillars of Lent mentioned in our Gospel. Each of them teaches us how to resist selfishness, how to resist indulging our every desire. Consider fasting: if you are hungry, why wouldn’t you eat right away? Hunger is the body’s sign that it needs food. But fasting teaches us that we are in control of our desires, that we can make sacrifices for a greater good, just as Jesus sacrificed himself for our salvation. Fasting teaching us self-restraint, which in turn teaches us self-sacrifice. The same is true of almsgiving: by giving our money away to the poor, we teach ourselves that money is intended to be used for Christian purposes, not to be stored away and accumulated endlessly. And prayer, though of course essential for our relationship with our Creator, is also a sacrifice of time. We give up time for the sake of God and to intercede for others. Each of these three pillars is a powerful weapon against the spiritual evils of selfishness and self-indulgence.
My friends, it is so easy for us to become obsessed with the world and with ourselves. It is so easy to live our lives only pursuing our own wealth, pleasure, power, and fame. Lent protects us against this. Our penances during this season, and our practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, will give us victory in the battle against spiritual evils and will guarantee that we grow ever closer to Jesus.

¿Qué nos dice la Iglesia sobre el Miércoles de Ceniza? Ella nos da un resumen de lo que se trata este día en la oración de apertura de nuestra Misa: “Concede, O Señor, que podamos comenzar con santo ayuno esta campaña de servicio cristiano, para que, al emprender la batalla contra los males espirituales, podemos estar armados con armas de autocontrol”.
La Cuaresma, según esta oración, es una campaña de servicio cristiano. La Cuaresma está marcada por la reflexión sobre el autosacrificio de Jesús, quien se entregó en la Cruz por nuestros pecados. El servicio es modelar esta actitud de Jesús, de pensar en los demás antes que en nosotros mismos, de hacer sacrificios por el bien de los demás. Hoy marca el comienzo de la temporada cuando nos recordamos que nuestras vidas no son para nosotros, nuestras vidas son para los demás.
Pero la Iglesia va más allá: “…al emprender la batalla contra los males espirituales…” ¿Qué entendemos por males espirituales? Podríamos pensar en los siete pecados capitales: orgullo, envidia, ira, codicia, pereza, lujuria, y gula. Estos son males espirituales porque hacen que nos concentremos en nosotros mismos: lo que queremos, lo que podemos tener, lo que podemos tomar. Ninguno de estos nos ayuda a centrarnos en los demás. O podríamos pensar en las cuatro fuentes falsas de la felicidad: la riqueza, el placer, el poder y la fama. Una vez más, estos son males espirituales porque son egoístas: nos enfocan en nosotros mismos y no en los demás.
La oración concluye: “… para que… podemos estar armados con armas de autocontrol”. ¿Cuáles son estas armas de autocontrol? Son la oración, el ayuno y la limosna, los pilares de la Cuaresma mencionados en nuestro Evangelio. Cada uno de ellos nos enseña cómo resistir el egoísmo, cómo resistir la complacencia de cada uno de nuestros deseos. Considere ayunar: si tiene hambre, ¿por qué no comería de inmediato? El hambre es la señal del cuerpo de que necesita alimento. Pero el ayuno nos enseña que tenemos el control de nuestros deseos, que podemos hacer sacrificios por un bien mayor, tal como Jesús se sacrificó por nuestra salvación. El ayuno nos enseña autocontrol, que a su vez nos enseña autosacrificio. Lo mismo ocurre con la limosna: al dar nuestro dinero a los pobres, nos enseñamos a nosotros mismos que el dinero está destinado a ser usado para propósitos cristianos, no para ser almacenado y acumulado sin cesar. Y la oración, aunque por supuesto esencial para nuestra relación con nuestro Creador, también es un sacrificio de tiempo. Damos tiempo por el bien de Dios y para interceder por los demás. Cada uno de estos tres pilares es un arma poderosa contra los males espirituales del egoísmo y la autoindulgencia.
Mis amigos, es tan fácil para nosotros obsesionarnos con el mundo y con nosotros mismos. Es tan fácil vivir nuestras vidas solo persiguiendo nuestra propia riqueza, placer, poder y fama. La Cuaresma nos protege contra esto. Nuestras penitencias durante esta temporada y nuestras prácticas de oración, ayuno y limosna nos darán la victoria en la batalla contra los males espirituales y garantizarán que nos acerquemos cada vez más a Jesús.
