Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Just so that we are clear, the Immaculate Conception is Mary’s conception without sin in the womb of her mother, Saint Anne. She was conceived in the same way that all of us were conceived, but she was preserved from Original Sin. The Annunciation, which we celebrate on March 25th, is when Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, but that day is not today.
When a child is in its mother’s womb, everything that child receives – all of its nutrients, its oxygen, its vitamins, everything that is broken down and turned into flesh and blood and bones – everything this child receives comes from her mother.
So when we speak about Jesus in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we are talking about God receiving human flesh from his mother. It was from Mary that Jesus received his humanity. So we should not be surprised that God chose to preserve Mary from all stain, including the stain or original sin, from the moment of her own conception in the womb of Saint Anne. If Mary was going to pass her humanity on to Jesus, that humanity had to be pure and perfect.
We will never be as pure and as perfect as the Blessed Virgin Mary, but her life and her example can still inspire us. Even though we are not preserved from the stain of original sin, we are still washed from all sin at the moment of our baptism. After baptism, and after we renew the forgiveness of sins in confession, we become pure like Mary was pure.
And then we can be a vessel of the Lord like Mary was a vessel of the Lord. Mary carried Jesus in her body for nine months. We carry Jesus in our body every time we receive the Eucharist at Mass. Mary brought Jesus to the world by giving him arms and legs and a mouth. We bring Jesus, the Eucharist, to the world by being Jesus’ arms and legs and mouth.
Now, none of us feel as pure as Mary was pure, and none of us feel worthy to receive the Eucharist. But remember, if God was able to preserve Mary from all sin from the moment of her conception – a great an incredible miracle – then he can surely save us from our sins. We are made pure through Jesus just as Mary was made pure for Jesus. The power of Jesus can overcome all things, including our sins, and he does so that we, like Mary, can receive him and bring him into the world.

Para que quede claro, la Inmaculada Concepción es la concepción de María sin pecado en el vientre de su madre, Santa Ana. Ella fue concebida de la misma manera que todos fuimos concebidos, pero fue preservada del Pecado Original.
