During the Protestant Reformation, it became very clear that the only thing every reformer could agree on was that the Catholic Church was bad and that the Catholic interpretation of the Scriptures was wrong. But when these reformers tried to determine what the proper interpretation of the Scriptures was, they could never agree with each other. Some accepted the Eucharist, some rejected it. Some accepted the need for bishops, some rejected them. Some thought infants could be baptized, some disagreed.
The problem with these reformers, and all who reject the Catholic faith, is that they make the faith a matter of personal interpretation. What do I believe about the Bible? What do I believe about Jesus? But humans are selfish, opinionated, stubborn and sinful, and it is hard for us to try to read the Bible without being influenced by what we want. This is why Jesus gave us St. Peter and his successors, the Popes. In order for us to be sure that we are following the will of God and not our own will, we have to trust someone outside of ourselves. We have to have an external authority who can speak definitively about matters of faith. That is the Pope. The Pope protects us from error.
So on this Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, which is the feast of the teaching office of the Pope, we pray for our current Pope, Francis, that he may always be guided by the Holy Spirit, may lead the Church in truth, and be a source of unity for all Christians everywhere.

Durante la reforma protestante, quedó muy claro que lo único en lo que cada reformador podía ponerse de acuerdo era que la iglesia católica era mala y que la interpretación católica de las escrituras estaba equivocada. Pero cuando estos reformadores intentaron determinar cuál era la correcta interpretación de las escrituras, nunca pudieron estar de acuerdo entre sí. Algunos aceptaron la Eucaristía, algunos lo rechazaron. Algunos aceptaron la necesidad de los obispos, algunos los rechazaron. Algunos pensaban que los infantes podían ser bautizados, algunos discreparon.
El problema con estos reformadores, y todos los que rechazan la fe católica, es que hacen de la fe una cuestión de interpretación personal. ¿Qué creo yo de la Biblia? ¿Qué creo yo de Jesús? Pero los seres humanos son egoístas, obstinados, tercos y pecaminosos, y es difícil para nosotros tratar de leer la Biblia sin ser influenciados por lo que queremos. Por eso Jesús nos dio a San Pedro y a sus sucesores, los papas. Para asegurarnos de que estamos siguiendo la voluntad de Dios y no nuestra propia voluntad, tenemos que confiar en alguien fuera de nosotros mismos. Tenemos que tener una autoridad externa que pueda hablar definitivamente sobre asuntos de fe. Ese es el Papa. El Papa nos protege del error.
Así que en esta fiesta de la Silla de San Pedro, que es la fiesta de la oficina de enseñanza del Papa, oramos por nuestro actual Papa, Francisco, para que siempre sea guiado por el Espíritu Santo, pueda guiar a la iglesia en la verdad, y ser una fuente de unidad para todos los cristianos en todas partes.
