Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first person born in the United States to be named a Catholic Saint. And she has such an interesting biography! She was a member of a wealthy New York City family which raised her in the Episcopal Church. It was her family that introduced her to charitable works like serving the poor and tending the sick. She married a wealthy man and had five children. But she also suffered the loss of her mother at a young age and her step-mother several years later. She discovered Roman Catholicism on a trip to Italy, immediately after her husband died. As a widow, she struggled to support her children and extended family, especially because her conversion to Catholicism alienated her from all her old friends in New York.
Eventually, she moved to Baltimore to start the first parish school in the United States, and to start the first religious order of nuns in the United States. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton is a beautiful example that every country and every culture can produce saints by the grace of God.
