Many people spend this week of the new year looking back on last year and reflecting on everything that has happened in the past twelve months. Newspapers will write retrospectives, artists will draw comics, and some TV programs or internet websites may even make lists of the ten best and ten worst things about anno domini two thousand and seventeen.
Well, I went and looked at some of these reviews, and most were pretty negative about the year. Part of this is because our national politics is so broken, and there does not seem to be a lot of hope of repairing it, which puts a negative lens on everything else, too. But there were also some horrible hurricanes and international incidences, so I can see where these commentators are coming from. Still, though, in a year where Taylor Swift drops a new album, things were not all bad.
And yet, whether we had a good year or a bad year, I think it is probably wise to follow Mary’s example from the Gospel in all things. After crazy stuff keeps happening with her baby, the Gospel says “[she] kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.” She did not freak out. She did not speak in hyperboles. She did not feel compelled to jump to action. No, Mary reflected on these things in her heart.
Why is this the perfect example of what to do when we are surrounded by overwhelming events?
First, because this attitude does not ignore the events going on around us. It is attentive and watchful.
Second, because it does not rush to a panicked frenzy of action, trying to control or react to something far too big for any individual. This attitude realizes that these are big events and any action in response to it must be slow and deliberate.
Third, this attitude is perfect because it shows an appropriate level of detachment. The most important thing in the world is our relationship with God. Everything else can wait, and be addressed in its own time. Nothing except the end of the world is the end of the world.
Finally and most importantly, this attitude allows time for God to have his say. Again, these are big events, and reflection is necessary, specifically reflection on how God may be working through such events, either as the source of a great good, or as the one who is able to bring good out of evil. If we forget that God operates in our world, if we forget to reflect, then we will easily lose hope and be overwhelmed. Reflection allows God to permeate and interpenetrate all things.
So yes, a lot of things happened in 2017. And a lot of them were big things that will not go away with the New Year. So let’s follow the example of Mary and dwell on these things in our hearts, discerning their meaning, letting them wash over us, and seeking to understand how God is working through them all. Only then, well-informed by God’s speaking to us in our hearts, only then might we be ready to respond with prudent action.

Muchas personas pasan esta semana del año nuevo mirando hacia atrás el año pasado y reflexionando sobre todo lo que ha sucedido en los últimos doce meses. Los periódicos escribirán retrospectivas, los artistas dibujarán historietas, y algunos programas de televisión o sitios web pueden incluso hacer listas de las diez mejores y diez peores cosas sobre Anno Domini dos mil diecisiete.

¿Por qué es este el ejemplo perfecto de qué hacer cuando estamos rodeados de acontecimientos abrumadores?
En primer lugar, porque esta actitud no ignora los acontecimientos que suceden a nuestro alrededor. Es atento y vigilante.
Segundo, porque no se apresura a un frenesí de acción aterrorizado, tratando de controlar o reaccionar a algo demasiado grande para cualquier individuo. Esta actitud se da cuenta de que estos son grandes acontecimientos y cualquier acción en respuesta a ella debe ser lenta y deliberada.
En tercer lugar, esta actitud es perfecta porque muestra un nivel apropiado de desprendimiento. Lo más importante en el mundo es nuestra relación con Dios. Todo lo demás puede esperar, y ser abordado en su propio tiempo. Nada excepto el fin del mundo es el fin del mundo.
Finalmente y lo más importante, esta actitud permite que Dios tenga su opinión. Una vez más, estos son grandes eventos, y la meditación es necesaria, específicamente la meditación sobre cómo Dios puede estar trabajando a través de tales acontecimientos, ya sea como la fuente de un gran bien, o como el que es capaz de sacar el bien del mal. Si olvidamos que Dios opera en nuestro mundo, si nos olvidamos de meditar, entonces perderemos fácilmente la esperanza y nos abrumaremos. La meditación permite que Dios impregne e compenetrase todas las cosas.
Así que sí, muchas cosas ocurrieron en dos mil diecisiete. Y muchos de ellos eran grandes cosas que no se va a desaparecer con el año nuevo. Así que sigamos el ejemplo de María y habitemos sobre estas cosas en nuestros corazones, discerniendo su significado, dejándoles fluir sobre nosotros, y tratando de entender cómo Dios está trabajando a través de todos ellos. Sólo entonces, bien informado por Dios hablándonos en nuestros corazones, sólo entonces podríamos estar listos para responder con acción prudente.
