Today is the feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul. What is so amazing about Saint Paul is that we consider him to be one of the greatest saints of the Church, despite the fact that he spent many years arresting, torturing, and killing Christians. Can you imagine that? This guy, who is the most dedicated and ruthless enemy of your small community of believers, suddenly comes and tells you that he wants to join that same community. Would you believe him? Would you trust him? Would you welcome him?
And what about Saint Paul? How could he look in the faces of these Christians and ask to be welcomed and trusted and forgiven? How could he live with himself after all he had done?
This is the mystery of God’s forgiveness in Jesus Christ. Jesus went all the way to the cross for our sins, so he asks us to go just as far. To forgive the greatest sinners with love and joy. And he also asks us to learn to forgive ourselves. After we confess our sins, God has already forgiven them. Who are we to still feel guilt for them after they have been washed away in the saving blood of Jesus Christ?

Hoy es la fiesta de la conversión de San Pablo. Lo que es tan asombroso acerca de San Pablo es que lo consideramos uno de los más grandes santos de la iglesia, a pesar del hecho de que pasó muchos años arrestando, torturando y matando a los cristianos. ¿Te lo imaginas? Este chico, que es el enemigo más dedicado y despiadado de su pequeña comunidad de creyentes, repentinamente viene y le dice que quiere unirse a esa misma comunidad. ¿Le creerías? ¿Confías en él? ¿Le darías la bienvenida?
¿Y qué hay de San Pablo? ¿Cómo podría mirar en los rostros de estos cristianos y pedir ser acogido y confiado y perdonado? ¿Cómo podría vivir consigo mismo después de todo lo que había hecho?
Este es el misterio del perdón de Dios en Jesucristo. Jesús fue todo el camino a la Cruz por nuestros pecados, así que nos pide que vayamos tan lejos. Para perdonar a los más grandes pecadores con amor y gozo. Y también nos pide que aprendamos a perdonarnos a nosotros mismos. Después de confesar nuestros pecados, Dios ya los ha perdonado. ¿Quiénes somos nosotros para seguir sintiendo culpa por ellos después de haber sido lavados en la sangre salvadora de Jesucristo?
