Why did the Israelites lose the Ark? Because they treated it like a magical object. They believed that if they simply had the Ark, that if they simply followed a formula, they could manipulate God into doing what they wanted. But the Ark is not a magical object, it is a reminder of the presence of God. The Israelites never once prayed to God or asked for his presence. Instead, ironically, it is the Philistines who make a big deal out of the fact that the Ark points to the presence of God. It is the enemies of Israel that remember that the presence of God is the most important thing, and the Ark is secondary. So the Philistines are allowed to capture the Ark, because they understand its true meaning.
My friends, I see people fall into this way of thinking all the time. So often people believe that if they just pray another Rosary, or burn another candle, or finally go to Confession, then they will receive some miracle that they are praying for. But this is superstition! This is not how God works! This is using objects like magical objects, in order to manipulate God. No. Instead, Rosaries and candles are important, not as magical objects or secret formulae, but because they remind us of the presence and love of God in our lives. Confession is important because we will experience the presence of God more strongly when we remove sin from our lives. We do not pray in order to force God to do what we want. We pray so that we might know what God wants from us.

¿Por qué los israelitas perdieron el arca? Porque lo trataron como un objeto mágico. Ellos creían que si simplemente tenían el arca, que si simplemente siguieran una fórmula, podían manipular a Dios para que hiciera lo que querían. No. En cambio, los rosarios y las velas son importantes, no como objetos mágicos o fórmulas secretas, sino porque nos recuerdan la presencia y el amor de Dios en nuestras vidas. La confesión es importante porque experimentaremos la presencia de Dios con más fuerza cuando removemos el pecado de nuestras vidas. No oramos para forzar a Dios a hacer lo que queremos. Oramos para que podamos saber lo que Dios quiere de nosotros.
