Our first reading today comes from the Song of Songs, a book that seems odd in the Bible because it is an erotic love poem. But the only reason it seems odd is because we forget that our love for God can be as exciting and emotional and heart-racing as the experience of two people falling in love. It is so easy for us to think about our prayer or our relationship with God as a duty that we have to fulfill, and that makes it dry and boring. But the Song of Songs reminds us that it does not have to be this way: instead, we can fall in love with God, our heart can race when we think of him, and we can leap towards his presence like a gazelle. If this seems impossible to us, then we need to rethink our images of God.

Nuestra primera lectura de hoy viene del Cantar de los Cantares, un libro que parece extraño en la Biblia porque es un poema erótico del amor. Pero la única razón por lo que parece extraño es porque olvidamos que nuestro amor por Dios puede ser tan emocionante como la experiencia de dos personas enamorarse. Es tan fácil para nosotros pensar acerca de nuestra oración o nuestra relación con Dios como un deber que tenemos que cumplir, y eso lo hace seco y aburrido. Pero el Cantar de los Cantares nos recuerda que no tiene que ser así: en cambio, podemos enamorarnos de Dios, nuestro corazón puede correr cuando pensamos en él, y podemos saltar hacia su presencia como una gacela. Si esto nos parece imposible, entonces necesitamos repensar nuestras imágenes de Dios.
