November 04, 2017 – Feast of Saint Charles Borromeo

Readings/Context: I preached this at a parish dedicated to St. Charles Borromeo, so this was a solemnity in that parish. As such, I used the readings proper to St. Charles, which are not readily available online.

Saints always emerge in the Church during times of crisis, and Saint Charles Borromeo was no different. He was born when Martin Luther was still alive, and lived during the Council of Trent, but he was best known for being a holy and reforming bishop. His role was crucial to Catholic survival following the Reformation, because the lack of holiness amongst the bishops was seen as a strong argument against the authority of the Roman Church. But Charles Borromeo, after being appointed to the Archdiocese of Milan, set about trying to reform that local church by creating a seminary, increasing discipline among the clergy, and visiting each and every one of his parishes, all actions unheard of at a time when many bishops never even visited their dioceses.

The challenge for us today is to realize that the Church, and Christianity in general, is now in crisis, as people leave the Church and religion in droves. At the time of the Reformation, it was holy bishops and pastors that arose to prove that God was still present in the Church. Now we need holy lay people, who show by their sanctity of life that God can have a drastic difference in one’s life, even in this scientific and technical age. Will you be that lay person? Will you be the Charles Borromeo of this Post-Christian age?

Los Santos siempre emergen en la iglesia en tiempos de crisis, y San Carlos Borromeo no era diferente. Nació cuando Martín Lutero todavía estaba vivo, y vivió durante el Concilio de Trento, pero era más conocido por ser un obispo santo y reformador. Su papel fue crucial para la supervivencia católica después de la reforma, porque la falta de santidad entre los obispos fue vista como un fuerte argumento contra la autoridad de la iglesia romana. Pero Charles Borromeo, después de ser nombrado a la Arquidiócesis de Milán, se propuso tratar de reformar esa iglesia local creando un seminario, aumentando la disciplina entre el clero, y visitando todas y cada una de sus parroquias, todas las acciones no escuchadas en un momento en que muchos obispos ni siquiera visitaron sus diócesis.

El reto para nosotros hoy es darnos cuenta de que la iglesia, y el cristianismo en general, está ahora en crisis, mientras la gente deja la iglesia y la religión en tropel. En la época de la reforma, eran los obispos y los pastores santos que se presentaron para probar que Dios todavía estaba presente en la iglesia. Ahora necesitamos a los laicos santos, que muestran por su santidad de vida que Dios puede tener una diferencia drástica en la vida de uno, incluso en esta era científica y técnica. ¿serás esa persona laica? ¿serás el Charles Borromeo de esta era post cristiana?
