In the Gospel today, Jesus makes a direct connection between the unity of his disciples and their evangelical witness. “I pray not only for these, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, […] that the world may believe that you sent me.”
As a priest, I can tell you that our parishes are full of divisions. Seemingly holy people hold grudges. Prayer groups and ministry teams have infighting, cliques, and power struggles. These things happen all the time, and they are very, very sad.
They are sad because we put our own, petty needs above the Gospel. No group or ministry is above the Gospel. Our only mission is to bring people to Jesus Christ, and when we let anger, frustration, and old wounds divide us, no one is going to see Jesus in us. We are not going to be able to bring anyone to Jesus. Drama is a tool of the Devil.
But sometimes when we find ourselves in these divisions, we do not know how to get out of them. When this happens, we should look to the example of our Lord. Jesus went to the Cross. Making peace is a cross. Forgiving is a cross. Nothing is harder or more painful than having to swallow our pride and being the first one to apologize. But that is what we are called to do. We are called to go to the cross, so that we can follow the example of Jesus. We are called to give up our hatreds so that we can follow Jesus. We are called to be united, because that is the only way we will ever be able to preach the Gospel.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús hace una conexión directa entre la unidad de sus discípulos y su testimonio evangélico. “Padre, no sólo te pido por mis discípulos, sino también por los que van a creer en mí por la palabra de ellos, para que todos sean uno, […] a fin de que sean uno en nosotros y el mundo crea que tú me has enviado.”
Como sacerdote, puedo decirles que nuestras parroquias están llenas de divisiones. La gente aparentemente santa guarda rencor. Los grupos de oración y los equipos ministeriales tienen camarillas y luchas de poder. Estas cosas pasan todo el tiempo, y son muy, muy tristes.
Están tristes porque ponemos nuestras propias y mezquinas necesidades por encima del Evangelio. Ningún grupo o ministerio está por encima del Evangelio. Nuestra única misión es llevar a la gente a Jesucristo, y cuando dejamos que la ira, la frustración y las viejas heridas nos dividen, nadie va a ver a Jesús en nosotros. No vamos a poder llevar a nadie a Jesús. El drama es una herramienta del diablo.
Pero a veces cuando nos encontramos en estas divisiones, no sabemos cómo salir de ellos. Cuando esto suceda, debemos mirar al ejemplo de nuestro Señor. Jesús fue a la Cruz. Hacer la paz es una cruz. Perdonar es una cruz. Nada es más difícil o más doloroso que tener que tragar nuestro orgullo y ser el primero en disculparse. Pero eso es lo que estamos llamados a hacer. Estamos llamados a ir a la cruz, para que podamos seguir el ejemplo de Jesús. Estamos llamados a renunciar a nuestros odios para que podamos seguir a Jesús. Estamos llamados a estar unidos, porque esa es la única manera en que jamás podremos predicar el Evangelio.
