This episode from Exodus, about the Golden Calf, is so incredibly pitiful. Only forty days before, the people had seen the glory of God, such incredible glory that they begged Moses not to let the Lord speak to them, for they were afraid. Only forty days before, they had solemnly sworn to obey the commandments God had given through Moses, including the prohibition against making gods out of gold. And yet, after only forty days, the people abandon Moses, abandon the Lord, and ask to start worshipping other gods, made by their own hands. How could they, who saw the glory and majesty of the true God, think that some stupid cow made of dumb metal could ever measure up?
And yet, to be honest, this is not so far-fetched for me. People get bored and get depressed easily. Forty days seems like a long time. Think about it: how many of you have made a resolution, like for New Years or for Lent, and how long until you gave up? I have certainly done this multiple times. I make all the preparations, I get started, I do it a few times, and then give up. Many people describe this phenomenon with exercise: they start at the gym, they do not see immediate results, and they give up. This is what the Israelites did in the desert: everything was going great, God was on their side, and then the second they felt a doubt creep in, the abandoned everything and gave up.
Unfortunately, this is not how God works. Anything worth doing, and especially anything worth doing in the spiritual life, requires time, patience, and hard work. If we want to pray, if we want to feel close to God, we have to put in the time. We have to make a resolution and stick to it. Even when we do not see immediate results. Even when we do not feel super happy joyful feelings. Still, we persevere. We persevere because we have, at some point in our lives, seen the glory of the Lord, and we allow that experience to carry us through, regardless of how we feel. And I assure you, it does start to get a little bit easier after forty days.

Perseveramos porque, en algún momento de nuestras vidas, hemos visto la gloria del Señor, y permitimos que esa experiencia nos lleve a través, independientemente de cómo nos sintamos. Y te aseguro que empieza a ser un poco más fácil después de cuarenta días.
