We may be shocked by the actions of Herod in today’s Gospel, wherein he kills all the male children in Bethlehem out of jealously and fear of the newborn king. But, I am sorry to say, killing children has long been part of human history. The Book of Exodus recounts how Pharaoh killed all the male Hebrew children because he feared the increase of the Hebrew people. The Greeks and Romans were known to “expose” unwanted children, that is, to leave these children out in the wilderness to die. Today we have the scourge of abortion.

Christians, however, have opposed the killing of children since the very beginning of our faith. Some early Christians in the Roman Empire even went so far as to rescue and raise children who were left in the wilderness by their pagan parents. And, contrary to those who think this is a new thing, the Didache, a Christian document from 96 A.D., prohibits killing by abortion.

As Christians, our defense of children goes back to the very beginnings of our faith. We understand that it is very easy for the powerful to dominate the weak and even to kill them. Our Lord made himself weak and powerless in the manger at Bethlehem, so by defending the lives of children, who are the weakest among us, we seek to defend all those in whom we see the weakness of our Lord.

Podemos ser sorprendidos por las acciones de Herodes en el Evangelio de hoy, donde mata a todos los niños varones en Belén de celos y temor del rey recién nacido. Pero, lamento decirlo, matar niños ha sido durante mucho tiempo parte de la historia de la humanidad. El libro de éxodo relata cómo el Faraón mató a todos los niños hebreos varones porque temía el aumento del pueblo hebreo. Los griegos y los romanos eran conocidos por “exponer” a los niños no deseados, es decir, a dejar a estos niños en el desierto para que mueran. Hoy tenemos el azote del aborto.

Los cristianos, sin embargo, se han opuesto a la matanza de niños desde el principio de nuestra fe. Algunos cristianos primitivos en el imperio romano incluso llegaron a rescatar y criar a niños que fueron dejados en el desierto por sus padres paganos. Y, contrariamente a los que piensan que esto es una cosa nueva, la Didaché, un documento cristiano del año noventa y seis, prohíbe matar por el aborto.

Como cristianos, nuestra defensa de los niños se remonta a los comienzos de nuestra fe. Entendemos que es muy fácil para los poderosos dominar a los débiles e incluso matarlos. Nuestro Señor se hizo débil e impotente en el pesebre de Belén, así que defendiendo las vidas de los niños, que son los más débiles entre nosotros, buscamos defender a todos aquellos en quienes vemos la debilidad de nuestro Señor.
