In today’s Gospel, Peter says something that all of us say at some point. “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing…”
It is very easy for us to become discouraged or exhausted or overwhelmed, as Peter had become. It is easy for us to be on the verge of giving up, on our work, on our marriage, on our families, on whatever seems to be useless and frustrating.
What matters is not that we become overwhelmed, but what we say next. Many times we say “I have worked hard all night and caught nothing” and then make an excuse. I have worked all night and caught nothing, so I should not have to help my wife at home, so I should not have to take care of my kids, so I should not have to go to church.
But Peter does the opposite. Peter says “but at your command I will lower the nets”. And this obedience, this obedience to God, this duty despite his despair, made all the difference in his life. Because he still obeyed God and followed the will of God, Peter become one of the greatest saints in Heaven, whose story we still tell two-thousand years later.
Do not give up! Follow God, even when it is difficult, and God will reward your fidelity.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Pedro dice algo que todos nosotros decimos en algún momento. “Maestro, hemos trabajado toda la noche y no hemos pescado nada…”
Es muy fácil para nosotros desanimarnos o agotarnos o abrumarnos, como Pedro se había convertido. Es fácil para nosotros estar a punto de renunciar a nuestro trabajo, a nuestro matrimonio, a nuestras familias, a lo que parece ser inútil y frustrante.
Lo que importa no es que nos convirtamos en abrumados, sino lo que decimos a continuación. Muchas veces decimos “he trabajado toda la noche y no he pescado nada” y luego hago una excusa. “He trabajado toda la noche y no he pescado nada, así que no debería tener que ayudar a mi esposa en casa, así que no debería tener que cuidar de mis hijos, por lo que no debería tener que ir a la iglesia.”
Pero Pedro hace lo contrario. Pedro dice “ pero, confiado en tu palabra echaré las redes”. Y esta obediencia, esta obediencia a Dios, este deber a pesar de su desesperación, hizo toda la diferencia en su vida. Porque él todavía obedeció a Dios y siguió la voluntad de Dios, Pedro se convirtió en uno de los más grandes santos de los cielos, cuya historia todavía contamos dos mil años después.
¡No se rinda! Sigue a Dios, aun cuando sea difícil, y Dios recompensará tu fidelidad.
