I really like to listen to podcasts from Bishop Robert Barron. Bishop Barron is an excellent and very intelligent evangelist, best known for his television series “Catholicism”, and two years ago was made auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles.
Anyway, I just listened to a podcast where he was asked about Hispanic ministry, and he said something very important. Bishop Barron said that there are few communities in the United States more devoted to their faith than Hispanics, so Hispanic ministry should be a lot less about us (and by “us” he meant the established Anglo communities) reaching out to the Hispanics, and more about the Hispanics reaching out to and evangelizing everyone else. He said that this country needs the faith, the devotion, and the fire present in the Hispanic community.
And of course, he is right! But, my friends, if you are going to spread the Gospel, and we do need you to spread the Gospel, notice what Jesus does in the Gospel today. Jesus asks his disciples to do something crazy. He asks them to go out into the world with nothing but trust. And why is this important? Because the Gospel, the announcement of the Kingdom of God, is radical, and a radical message requires radical action.
This is why poverty, chastity, and obedience are so celebrated in the Church: because they are so radical and so different from the rest of the world. If you can give a radical example, if you can show that Christians live differently, that Christians rely on the grace of Jesus, then your faith will spread like wildfire.

Jesús les pide a sus discípulos que hagan algo loco. Les pide que salgan al mundo con nada más que confianza. Y ¿Por qué es esto importante? Porque el Evangelio, el anuncio del Reino de Dios, es radical, y un mensaje radical requiere una acción radical.
Por eso la pobreza, la castidad y la obediencia son tan célebres en la Iglesia: porque son tan radicales y tan diferentes del resto del mundo. Si puedes dar un ejemplo radical, si puedes mostrar que los cristianos viven de otra manera, que los cristianos confían en la gracia de Jesús, entonces tu fe se extenderá como un reguero de pólvora.
