Upcoming Parish Retreats and Events
We have three major events upcoming, that I want to make sure everyone knows about and has on their calendars.
The Upper Room Retreat
May 14, 6:30 pm [English] || May 15, 7:00 pm [Spanish] || Assumption Gym
Mari Pablo from the Evangelical Catholic will be here to give a retreat on the Upper Room (the site of the Last Supper and Pentecost). The goal of the retreat is to show up how Jesus and the Apostles found stability during times of transition and chaos through community and the Eucharist. This will also kick off a 6-week small group study on the Eucharist for all who are interested. See flyer below.
Tolton Play
May 23, 7:00 pm, Assumption Gym
Tolton: From Slave to Priest is a powerful new live production based on the life of Fr. Augustus Tolton, the first African American priest. This compelling true story of courage, forgiveness, and reconciliation resonates deeply with modern American audiences. Bishop Joseph Perry of Chicago, postulator for Fr. Tolton’s canonization cause, is calling Tolton a production that will “inspire a new era of peace, hope and forgiveness in America.” The production runs 75 minutes, and is suitable for middle school age and up. See flyer below.
In order for our parish to pull this off, we have some significant needs:
- 4 – 5 strong folks from 12:30pm – 5pm on May 23 in the Gym to help with set-up
- 4 – 5 strong folks from 8:30pm – 10pm to assist with take down
- 1 information table volunteer for one hour BEFORE and one hour AFTER the show
- 2 – 3 hospitality ministers an hour before the show to pass out programs at the entrance
Please contact Dr. Kathy Ernst, kathye@assumption.org, if you can help.
Volunteer Appreciation
June 08, 6:30 pm, Assumption Gym
The parish will be hosting a dinner to recognize the many volunteers who carry out parish ministries throughout the year. The centerpiece of this event will be testimonies from parishioners about how their ministry has helped them grow closer to Christ. If you are willing to share how your ministry helped you grow closer to Christ, we really need to hear from you! Please contact Dr. Kathy Ernst at kathye@assumption.org.
Looking for a Car or Drivers for Priests
I will put up a post about this eventually to whatcomcatholic.org, but we are relying on 2 (maybe 3) priests in July and August who do not have cars. Fr. Philip, visiting from Kenya and staying in Ferndale, will be helping out until Fr. Stephen arrives from India. Then, when Fr. Stephen arrives, he will not have a car or a license. Also, one of our retired priests in the area, Fr. Nisbet, may need transportation help if we end up relying heavily on him.
To address this, we need one of two things:
- A car that Fr. Stephen can own. Ideally, the parish would receive this car first and make it available for Fr. Philip in July and August, then Fr. Stephen would “buy” it (if we get it for free, he will get it for free) when he gets here. Free vehicles are great, of course, but we are also willing to pay for it. What matters most is that it is reliable, since there will be a lot of driving for the priests.
- Drivers for Sunday and daily Masses. If we cannot find a car, then we will need volunteers to drive Fr. Philip and Fr. Stephen to their Masses. Both will likely be based out of Ferndale. Having a few drivers on call for Fr. Nisbet would be nice, too, but we are not yet sure how much we will have to rely on him.
